Fair Labor Standards Act Should Include Home Care Aides

It looks like the present Administration is trying to do the right thing by proposing regulations that would provide for minimum wage and overtime pay for home care aides. Majority of the home care attendants I have had a chance to work with are hard-workers and well deserving. So, if you want your opinions to be heard, you have up to February 27th to weigh in on this issue. See article where to send in your public comment. Let's help this proposed policy pass.

  1. It's time we acknowledge the worth of home care aides in our society by paying them accordingly. Nobody can argue the fact they are hard working and deserving. However, he argument comes up as to whether the chronically ill and elderly as well as the middle class can afford to pay more for private home care aides. Unfortunately, custodial care is not covered by insurance unless one has Medicaid or private Long Term Care Insurance which is quite costly.

  2. Thank you for posting information about this crucial topic. With the increasing numbers of our elder population, the need for home health aide (HHA) services will also increase. The goal is to ensure that HHAs are adequately paid and appropriately assigned. The dilemma occurs when individuals request HHA services based on “want” instead of assessed need. HHAs may have to be paid according to level of care provided. Of course, level of care may be challenging to determine. We may have to balance the service of HHAs with attendance at adult social and medical day care centers.
