Patient Satisfaction tied into Medicare Reimbursement
According to CMS, Medicare will start paying hospitals that scores high on their patient satisfactions surveys. What does everyone think about the CMS value based purchasing proposal that is due to begin in 2012?

  1. First, I would like to congratulate the Website Committee for a job well done. This website is informative and easy to navigate. Now with the medicare proposal...I think it is a good thing because it brings the focus back to caring for our patients with compassion, which healthcare providers sometimes tend to overlook because they are inundated with work/patient load. However, there are those you can't please no matter what you do. It is the bad experience/s that people usually remember most and it only takes one to ruin it for everyone.

  2. Great comment! I agree it's always good to improve on patient care and communication. Here's an interesting article that talks about the northeast having grumpier people with higher expectations. Check it out! http://www.kaiserhealthnews.org/Stories/2011/April/28/medicare-hospital-patient-satisfaction.aspx
So, if this is true, we in the NY, NJ, etc. will be penalized financially.

  3. What a great article! Thank you for sharing. I agree that the hospitals should not be penalized for patient's perception. Northeast Hospitals will be hit the hardest because we are so diverse. Having worked at a Southern Hospital for many years I could vouch that the culture here is so different. For example, A person addressed as Ma'am/Sir while acceptable in the South is totally offensive here. There should be a better way to score patient satisfaction because like the article said some things are just not within our control.

  5. I stumbled upon an article that teaches doctors to be mindful. In this article the doctors practiced mindful communication. Mindfulness eventually could lead to excellent care. We could all benefit from it. Check it out!
